Kindergarten game

With METSTA, we are creating a series of serious games that offer a playful introduction to standards for children and adolescents. The purpose of the games is to give insight into how common understanding is created and why having rules makes society work. This is essentially what standards are and understanding how standards work is important for being part of society.
The serious game series is envisioned to provide teachers with a way to increase youths’ understanding of standardization and its benefits, creating awareness for the concept of common understanding, consensus, and rule-setting. By using a serious game approach, we aim to make the learning content relatable, applicable, and applied – making learning engaging and fun.
In the first game, we “simulate” a candy factory, wherein players get several different tasks like coming up with a new candy and putting parts of a gummy bear together. This helps them see how certain limitations and rules are needed both for creating a yummy candy that people would want to eat, and for the feasibility of production.
In the long run, we want to expand on this concept to provide a broader series of games that can be played all the way from kindergarten to high school gradually introducing more complex ideas and the specific procedures of standardization. By making children aware of the importance of standards at an early age, we hope to spur a lasting interest.
